Walter Wolfe
Walter Wolfe was the son of Alfred Henry and Emma Wolfe, of 31 Crewdson Road Brixton, London. His service record is available via Ancestry and shows he enlisted in August 1916, aged 24 years and 3
months. After he enlisted in the 8th Middlesex Regiment, he went to France on
19 July 1917 to join the 1/8th Battalion, but transferred to
23rd Battalion on 27 September 1917.
On 29 October 1917 Walter was slightly wounded by an enemy bomb. He then served in Italy from November – March 1918. By 9 March 1918 his unit was back on Western Front. On 25 March 1918 Walter was wounded with Gun Shot Wounds to his side, chest and thigh and shipped back to the UK on 10 April 1918. A telegram sent ahead warned that he was ‘dangerously ill’ and he died on the 16th May 1918 in the Southmead Section, 2nd Southern General Hospital.
