Horfield Castle

By the early nineteenth century, some larger houses had begun to appear in the area bordering the South Common. In 1851 a magistrate built a large house, with turrets either side of his gate, and named his property ‘Horfield Castle’. Previously it had always been known as Lambert’s house, and before that, Mr Davis’. The house was demolished in the 1950’s and the site remained derelict until a new line of houses were built there in the 1960’s. Some of the old stone wall surrounding Horfield Castle remains, and gives an indication of the turrets it once had.
